As You May Have Gathered, Overboard! Is a game all about pirates. No, geekboy, not software pirates - we're talking about pirates of the old skool, cutlass-waving,'arr-har, me hearties' variety here. The ones who used to bob around on the high seas, singing off-colour songs about mermaids, drinking rum laced with their own urine, and of course boarding passing ships, gutting the occupants like fish, then nicking all their stuff.

They all had names like Blackbeard, Bluebeard and Yellowbeard, but never names like Pink Moustache or Cyan Anal Hair. (Well, not that we are aware of) Their famous skull and crossbones motif could strike terror into the heart of even the stoutest seafarer, and today looks way cool on the side of a motorbike. Adam Ant used to dress up like one - a pirate, I mean. He never dressed up like a motorbike, although these days he'd probably wear anything if it would revive his flagging career. I digress.Pirates, that's what Overboard! Is concerned with. It's an action-cum-puzzle game in which you, Captain Spod, take command of a large pirate galleon and pilot it around a series of peril-packed levels.
It makes sense that the pirates are of the old school variety, since the game itself is also decidedly retro in feel, like a 3Dfx remake of a long-forgotten Spectrum game. Pieces of eight, film at elevenI Play Overboard! For a few minutes and you'll come away thinking 'Is that it?' And the answer, essentially, ' is 'yes'. There really isn't much to it.
It's all viewed from an overhead, slightly angled perspective (although a few other camera positions are available), and the controls are extremely simple: rotate left/right, move forward (there's no reverse because, hey, it's a boat yeah?) and fire (from port or starboard). The aim of the game is to Itraverse each level, blowing up enemy ships and taking over ports (by destroying their defences), with the occasional smuggling run or power-up tossed in to keep you happy.
Rather than consisting of vast expanses of ocean, the levels are decidedly labyrinthine and claustrophobic - it's a bit like navigating a canal system designed by a blind man with an Etch-a-Sketch.And a small ruled pad. Furthermore, each stage is rammed to the hilt with plenty of typically old skool computer game hazards of yore: intermittent jets of flame, rotating buzzsaws, gun implacements, etc. You can't just go steaming in (especially since you don't have a steamboat).
It's fiddly, timeconsuming, and really rather toilsome. It's also strangely moreish.
In the same way that shelling pistachio nuts can become more addictive than eating them, so finishing a given Overboard! Level can rapidly become an obsession. Whether you're actually enjoying yourself during this time is a moot point.

Think of it as a kind of non-edible snack. But not a rip-roaring excursion into hard-core gaming bliss. Wait for the budget release. A pirate of great cunning and power. The player will destroy various enemy strongholds, ports and shipyards while building his/her own fleet of oddly enhanced ships with add-ons during the game. OVERBOARD is a bizarre little game that'll remind players of the good old Super NES days, where gameplay and decent graphics went hand in hand. But Overboard is like nothing you've ever seen before, guaranteed! It's kind of a cross between and, with a top-down, isometric view and a fully 3-D landscape for you to. Roam around. You control a galleon full of pirates, sailing through five zones earning booty. Each zone is broken up into four levels, and there are old-fashioned Bosses for you to face, too. Psygnosis has an eye on the high seas this season with Overboard, a 94-overhead view battleship game that should play like (if it were set on Treasure Island). You take charge of a galleon and travel 'round the world, blowing up ports and pirates as you add to your ship and build your own fleet of fearsome firepower. You'll travel through exotic lands like the Caribbean, the Middle East, and the Arctic while using your swashbuckling arsenal of mines, depth charges, and cannons.
Psygnosis could have a sleeper hit with Overboard, and these early screens show a sea full of fun!

-Another fact - We have the software and the power to completely block adblock users from our site, but we're not going to, at least for now. We figure most of you would like to support us and you only installed Adblock because of other sites that aren't so considerate with their ad placement.

Please, don't punish us because of them, in the seven or so years I've been a blogger/webmaster I've ALWAYS considered the need to balance monetisation with reader experience. I want to build an audience not send them away.So go on, whitelist us and any other site you love. If it wasn't for ads, the internet would lose a whole chunk of really great niche content like this, which would be a real shame in our opinion. Now, go ahead and read the page if you want to, but wouldn't it be much more convenient if you just whitelisted us?:).
Sorry to both but I have a question. I have an official copy of Overboard and it has the flashing sea effect. I tried going into the congif file and edit it BUT when opened it is just an empty notepad file. Is there something I’m doing wrong? What text should be there? What do I have to add to this empty config file to change the settings of the flashing sea? I tried just adding the “under Sea Yes” and “Sea Surface Yes” but that didn’t work.
Could someone show me a screencap or something?I hope that you, or any other person reading this, could help me (and potentially others!).
